Internet Security
What is it and why do I need it? For those people who
have a connection to the internet, and don't have any
form of internet security in place - you are playing
russian roulette with your business, it's reputation
and it's profitability.
A few years ago, hacking was a rare event, only ever
directed at the high profile corporates or other companies
able to provide good media coverage.
Now... it's very different.
Bots ( robots, automated programs ) scan the internet
looking for active addresses, and when they find them,
will attempt to gain as much information about the services
running at that address - and depending on the bot,
may also try to hack its' way in.
The number of these hostile programs scanning the internet
is increasing daily. The internet is not a safe haven
to be trusted implicitly. Gone are the days of leaving
your internet door unlocked and wide open. Do that,
and you will find your TV missing when you come back.
Hackers are probably trying to gain access to your
connection now, as you read this.
It used to be a case of "if I get hacked"
- now it's a case of when!
e-tect.com specialises in internet security. From firewalls
to intrusion detection, we have it covered. Our
Managed
Internet Security service takes our
ad-hoc consultancy, and turns it into a valuable addition
to your current security measures.
We look at the internet and your business from a holistic
perspective. By helping to reduce the opportunities
hackers have to gain access to your network, or to distribute
hostile programs - we believe that everyone will benefit.
Firewalls for business.
e-tect are certified with products that work. Watchguard,
Cisco and Checkpoint.
We are also developing our own branded appliance which
will assist the smaller business or home user. Containing
features that matter when you want a firewall to be
a firewall, not just a box with flashing lights.
When it comes to security, we will always advocate
a seperate appliance over firewall software. When you
have been in the industry as long as us, you get to
know how things work. Software firewalls have been around
for a few years now, increasing in number due to savvy
marketing over real benefit. Software firewalls are
vulnerable to attack from within and virus scanners
are the software firewalls achillies heel. Out of date
signatures allow viruses free reign, many of which will
kill running processes before executing the real payload.
Many of these processes are... you guessed it ! Virus
scanners and software firewalls.
There is little comfort to know that the number of
viruses circulating the internet is growing day by day.
New variations, new attacks. Coupled with the delay
between a virus being identified, classified and then
a signature update or antidote becoming available, and
even up to date signatures can leave you wide open.
That in mind, software firewalls don't seem like the
most secure way of protecting you from unwanted attention.
